Dan Akroyd, Dr. Ray uit de Ghostbuster films, heeft in een radio-interview laten weten dat de kans op een derde Ghostbusters film erg groot is. Een terugkeer van de spookjagende professors lijkt dus erg groot. De reden waarom deel drie nog niet eerder de weg naar het witte doek heeft gevonden lag bij Bill Murray, die geen zin meer had om voor de derde maal de rol van Peter Venkman op zich te nemen.
Na jaren van uitstel heeft Murray laten weten dat hij wel zijn stem beschikbaar willen stellen aan de nieuw film. Zonder acteur maar met een stem lijkt CGI de ideale oplossing voor Ghostbusters 3. Voor Dan Akroyd ziet de toekomst er in ieder geval rooskleurig uit: "It lives. It lives today. Last year it didn't. This year it lives. With CGI animation and the way these cartoons are done, we can do everything I ever wrote in that script for much less money."
Over de film vertelde Dan het volgende: "We go to the hell side of Manhattan, downtown, Foley Square. It's all where the cops are--they are all blue minotaurs. Central Park is this huge peat mine with green demons there, surrounded by black onyx thousand-foot high apartment buildings with classic red devils, very wealthy. We go and visit a Donald Trump-like character who is Mr. Sifler. Luke Sifler. Lu-cifer. So we meet the devil in it."
