De nominaties voor de 81ste Academy Awards zijn bekendgemaakt. De grootste kanshebbers zijn The Curious Case of Benjamin Button en Slumdog Millionaire, met respectievelijk dertien en tien nominaties. Beide films maken kans op de Oscar voor Beste Film, Beste Regie en Best Scenario.
Ook Milk (acht nominaties), Frost/Nixon en The Reader (beiden vijf nominaties) dingen mee in de categorie "Beste Film". Alle vijf de films in die categorie zijn tevens genomineerd voor Beste Regie. Kate Winslet is genomineerd voor de Oscar voor Beste Actrice. Opmerkelijk genoeg niet voor Revolutionary Road, maar voor The Reader, waarvoor ze bij de afgelopen Golden Globes-uitreiking nog de prijs voor Beste Vrouwelijke Bijrol kreeg.
Ook andere films zijn meerdere malen genomineerd, maar maken geen kans op de Oscar voor Beste Film. The Dark Knight is achtmaal genomineerd, maar slechts eenmaal in een "belangrijke" categorie (Mannelijke Bijrol voor Heath Ledger). WALL-E krijgt zes nominaties, waaronder voor Beste Animatiefilm.
De Oscars worden op zondag 22 februari uitgereikt in Los Angeles in de Kodak Theater. De presentatie is in handen van acteur Hugh Jackman. Smug verder voor de lijst met de Oscarnominaties voor 2009!
